Schools out for Summer!

Jayne and I (The Art of Staring….) have had a great Spring and Summer and are now taking a short break through August while we take stock before we roll out our Autumn programme.

In July we launched the first of a new series of Guided Sketching Walks which were great fun and the students really enjoyed the day.

You can’t tell from these photos but it was a very hot day but luckily there was a bit of a breeze. Our six intrepid sketchers met at the Hungry Hiker for a meet and greet and to hand out a free kit bag and sketchbook to everyone.

During the day we took our explorers to various locations around Hengistbury Head to look at ways of sketching the environment around us. I’ll tell you now that there is a lot of environment at Hengistbury Head and for the beginner there is nowhere better to go and brave the fresh air with paint brush and sketchpad.

The main aim (Learning Outcome if you will) was to allow our students to feel confident enough to work freely and large with loose open and flowing mark making and in response to each location.

Walking from each location to the next was a lovely opportunity for a bit of chit chat and for our attendees to get to know each other so that by the end of the day everyone had made new friends and left with the confidence to go out ‘wild sketching’ on their own or with others in future.

All our sketchers felt they had really enjoyed the whole day and would come again. Luckily we are doing it again in September (and more to come).

Lastly, one of the students emailed later with the following testimonial which I thought was lovely so I asked her if I could quote it here.

The location and set up of the workshop was so inspiring; you were so supportive and nurtured such a safe learning environment which allowed me to do my first ever landscapes, first ever plein air and first ever large scale expressive painting. AND I worked with collage and ink and natural materials. AMAZING!

So there you go. Explore your inner creative by joining us soon for a Guided Sketching Walk or for any of our Printmaking for Beginners courses. Full details on our website.
