On the March!

It’s been a whirl of inspiration and activity since our last workshops at the beginning of the month. Winter seems as if it’s going to last forever, then it’s March and then suddenly we’re in the new season, days are lengthening and everything outside is suddenly fresh green…

We’ve managed between us to get to a couple of exhibitions. Earlier in the month it was Pierre Bonnard at the Tate Modern. Wonderful to be able to see so much all in one place-in fact almost too much to take in. I was interested to read again about how Bonnard went about making his paintings; not working from direct observation but finding ‘jumping off points’ and exploring an idea derived from his domestic surroundings. I love his depiction of the green reflected light from gardens into a room. I didn’t know that he worked on a number of paintings simultaneously, pinning canvases directly to the wall.

We’ve both had a quick visit to the 2019 Open at St Barbe’s in Lymington. So interesting to see a good selection of very good prints on show. We noticed a lovely woodcut from Tom Marshall (we are familiar with his drawings and watercolour) ,linocut by John Welsh utilizing limited colour beautifully, and small perfectly formed pair of  silkscreen prints by Sue Lees/Laws(didn’t keep a proper note of all the names, sorry!) in a wall of very beautiful small prints.Well worth a visit, and verrry nice tea and cake at Lounges, just down the High Street to refresh and debrief!

We’ve managed to get out into the wild with our sketching stuff too….

…a drawing expedition in the grey, blustery cold to Hod Hill in mid Dorset earlier in March and then at the end of March a turnaround in the weather-bright sunshine and cold wind up at our old friend Hengistbury Head. We are putting together a guided sketching day, exploring various drawing on location spots around the Head and Mudeford Spit, so all spots around there need to be road tested. We shall post dates when we have them. They will be full days, tutored as required, all materials provided and of course the traditional banana or apple cake on tap! We love drawing here. It can be a little daunting to go out and draw on location; we hope to help and inspire further exploration!!

We’re also getting ready for a Monoprinting Day at Burley Village Hall (Tuesday 2nd April, and 2 days of Collagraph Printmaking at Stanpit (6th7th April). We do have places available so get in touch if you like the look of either (or both!) of these printmaking processes.

Of course we’ve also been preparing for our Shaftesbury Arts Centre June exhibition fast approaching; we shall keep you posted with some work in progress from the pressbed and sketchbook!
